Bob Johnson was born in Kampala, Uganda, where a childhood surrounded by the wildlife and landscapes of East Africa first sparked his fascination with the natural world. His teenage years in North Yorkshire further deepened this connection with nature and the changing seasons.
His professional life took him beneath the waves, working as a diver on charter boats and later in advertising and film production associated with underwater photography and video. Many years spent in Sharm el Sheikh, at the tip of the Sinai Peninsular on the Red Sea, expanded his interest from the land into the marine environment and provided countless opportunities to observe and capture the natural world through the lens of the camera.
Since moving to East Lothian in 2012, Bob has continued this lifelong habit of observation. The photographs in this exhibition reflect the changing seasons, wildlife and everyday life around his home near Humbie. Among his favourite subjects are the poultry that roam freely there, each with its own character and personality.
All of the photographs in this exhibition were taken using an iPhone, demonstrating that the compelling images come not from complex equipment, but from a patient eye and an appreciation of the world around us.
